Kasi Friends kasi talent and the RAW Short Film Festival.
December 06 2017
Some initial work was done for Bulelani and then in early 2017 he called to say he’d been awarded a grant from the MTV Staying Alive Foundation to fund a social enterprise project with the goal of producing socially relevant short films, made by young aspiring filmmakers, to be shown in townships. These would be for entertainment but also to educate young people about social issues like gender violence, substance abuse and STD’s and, on the positive side, the power of education, and the benefit of sport in personal development.
Over the next several months the programme was designed and developed to completion by OFyt/Kasi Friends working with Bulelani and social enterprise company, Cool Planet, plus several other partners.
“RAW – a Short Film Festival for New Talent” was officially launched in October with the main prize being a film bursary from City Varsity. A call for entries attracted over 150 concept synopses, subsenquently whittled down to 15 finalists and 6 “winners”, who will each get to produce their short films. Scriptwriting and production workshops have been held at the Bertha Foundation in Khayelitsha, while 6 award-winning Cape Town film, documentary and commercial directors have agreed to mentor the 6 winning finalists. The films will be screened through 2018.
